Overview

Discovery the beautiful Art of Chinese Calligraphy in this beginner-friendly, 6-class course with expert calligrapher Harber Zhang. Chinese calligraphy reflects the essence of Chinese culture and is a centuries-old meditation that inspires deeper understanding and appreciation of our world.
 
Mr. Zhang will lead students through proper hand position, brush techniques, and different calligraphic styles. Students will leave with a strong base knowledge of this cherished art form and the building blocks to grow their calligraphy proficiency.
 
A student of famous calligrapher Yan Fangwei, Mr. Zhang has practiced calligraphy for more than 20 years. He is currently a director of the Denver Calligraphy Association and a director of the Rocky Mountain Calligraphy Association.
 
Class size limited to 20 students. Cost includes all calligraphy materials (brush, rice paper, inkwell, ink), but students are welcome to purchase/bring their own materials if preferred.
 
This course should be taken as a complete series.

Who is this course for?

This Chinese calligraphy course is structured for adult non-Chinese-speaking beginners, but all are welcome! As they say, whether you’re first starting out or already an expert, reviewing the basics is always important.

Introduction to the Four Treasures of Chinese Calligraphy: the brush, the inkwell, the ink, and the paper. 

History overview of the main styles of Chinese calligraphy and how they were developed and their defining characteristics.

Study and practice proper hand positioning.

Introduce first character study: Yong

History study of Kai Shu (楷書) calligraphy style. 

Continue practicing Yong

Introduce new character study (TBD based on skill level)

Continue practicing learned characters.

Introduce new character study (TBD based on skill level)

Continue practicing learned characters.

Introduce new character study (TBD based on skill level)

Continue practicing learned characters.

Introduce new character study (TBD based on skill level)

Full overview of all characters and (casual) evaluation of skills.

We will begin our calligraphy journey with reusable water scroll mats and graduate to ink and rice paper in our third class together. If you have some calligraphy experience and would like to brink in your own brush, ink, and rice paper, please feel free!
